Debut solo album from visionary Ozric Tentacles founder Ed Wynne.

Shimmer Into Nature was recorded and inspired by the different locations Ed travelled to over three years: From deep in the Colorado Mountains to the Firth of Forth, via the coastlines of Cornwall and South Devon.

Ed comments, "The idea is to transport the listener to a place where the everyday ups and downs of the world dissipate, leaving the mind free to wander through a colourful, omnidirectional guitar and synth driven musical landscape for a while, landing eventually, hopefully freshly charged, with a smile and a calmer spirit."

The music - comprising five long pieces - was written, programmed, mixed and performed by Ed, with mastering by Adam Goodlet at Re:Creation studios, with artwork designed by Psychedelic illustrator John Hurford.

CD in digipak.

In 1974, a young artist by the name of Robin Millar entered The Beatles' Apple Studios to record his first solo album. The LP was to be produced by Rolling Stone Mick Taylor, who also happened to be Robin's brother-in-law at that time. Both men worked hard on the album with the aid of Gordon Raitt on bass and Jamie Lane on drums and with the help of legendary session musicians (and Beatles session men!) Billy Preston, Nicky Hopkins and Bobby Keys they made a splendid album which would undoubtedly have achieved great success, had it been released at the time. However, when Mick Taylor announced his departure from The Rolling Stones, the record company withdrew their support for this album and it was shelved. (Only one single made it out, Catch As Catch Can c/w For My Life, the B-side of which was an edit of the originally 7.15 minute track). Unreleased, that is, until now, 45 years later, when Robin granted APCOR the rights to the much belated release of this masterpiece.

Cat's Eyes is a truly undiscovered gem which, hopefully, finally gets the attention it should have received almost half a century ago. The songs are well-crafted, the singing is beautiful and the playing is immaculate. Ten strong songs make up all of the 53 minutes and 32 seconds of the album, which was sourced from the original 2-track Apple master mix-down tapes.

Two versions of the album will be made available:
1) A 12" vinyl LP on splattered vinyl (Apcor LP03), housed in a gatefold cover (based on the original artwork) and a download voucher for all 10 songs as WAV files.
This edition will be numbered and strictly limited to 300 copies worldwide and will retail at 40 Euros.

2) A Compact Disc, housed in a gatefold cover (Apcor CD02), with the album's original 10 tracks plus an additional bonus track, the single edit of For My Life.
This edition will be limited to 500 copies worldwide and retail at 15 Euros.

The album will appeal to both Rolling Stones collectors and Beatles and Apple aficiandos and we expect especially the vinyl edition to be fully subscribed very quickly, so get your pre-orders in right now - as always, these products will be sold on a first come, first served basis! Of course you can order both the LP and the CD and save on shipping costs! We expect to start shipping in May 2019.

https://catstevens.com/back-to-earth-40th-anniversary-box-set-release/

In 1978, after having sold millions of records and become one of the biggest international artists of the 1970s, Cat Stevens decided to step out of the rock star spotlight and walk away. That year, he was to release his final album under that name.

While Stevens’ legions of fans were saddened by the news, along with the musicians who had played with him on record and stage, the singer himself was exhilarated by the prospect of moving on. “It was like going back to my original nature,” he reflected at the time. “Back to wide-eyed childhood again”. The appropriately-titled Back To Earth was his parting gift: an album that saw the London-born singer saying farewell to his fans, while obliquely explaining his decision to quit in songs such as ‘Last Love Song’ and ‘Just Another Night’.

“What’s going on behind the appearance of stardom or the stage itself can be a completely different world,” he says now, “and that’s what it was a lot of the time. I kept my sanity and I kept my eyes open.”Image-5.jpgIn May 2019, Back To Earth is to be reissued in various formats on Cat-O-Log Records / BMG, including a 6 Disc, 2LP Deluxe Boxset featuring the original album (remastered at Abbey Road), along with demos, unreleased tracks, and material from UNICEF’s 1979 Year Of The Child concert, the singer’s last live performance as Cat Stevens.

Upon its original release, Back To Earth received rave reviews. “Cat has come up with the kind of quality album that originally made him a superstar,” declared the London Evening News“Just one knockout song after another.” Billboard meanwhile applauded the album’s “tender, folksy ballads [and] up-tempo and spirited pop tunes”Hot Press hailed it as “a lush and intricately woven tapestry of fine melodies…really a return to form.”

Cat Stevens had been thinking long and hard for some time about quitting his music career. Aside from general disillusionment with fame, the singer had experienced a spiritual epiphany after being caught in a rip current and nearly drowning when swimming in the Pacific Ocean three years earlier. Crying to the heavens, “If you save me, I’ll work for you,” he was rescued by a gentle wave which carried him back to the shore.

What he calls his “gradual awakening” and decision to become a Muslim in 1977, changing his name to Yusuf Islam, was sparked by his brother gifting the singer a copy of the Quran for his 27th birthday. “I had discovered a new way to view the universe,” he explained back then. “Like a kid who had travelled by spiritual rocket to an exciting new world.”

Back-2-Earth-new-image-1024x546.jpg

Back To Earth was indeed a remarkable return to form, reuniting Stevens with Paul Samwell-Smith, the producer of his landmark, multi-platinum albums Tea For The Tillerman (1970) and Teaser And The Firecat (1971), as well as continuing his creative partnership with long-time guitarist Alun Davies.

Musically, the album was a blend of the acoustic balladeering and spiritually-questing style that had made the singer a worldwide star, along with more distant echoes of his years growing up as Steven Demetre Georgiou in London’s West End. Tracks such as ‘New York Times’ and ‘Randy’ recalled the influence upon him of the UK capital’s theatre land, and – since parts of the album had been recorded in New York City – Broadway.

“There was this other side of me which was the sort of musical composer,” he remembers. “I loved musicals and I was surrounded by them where I lived. So, I had Bernstein in my blood.”

Long overdue for re-evaluation, Back To Earth is a brilliant and fascinating album capturing Yusuf / Cat Stevens at a defining point in his life.

“Now,” as he said at the time of his departure from the music world, “I’ve come down from the stars.”

Taken from a cassette recording - with audio restored and mastered by DGM - Live in Newcastle, December 8, 1972 showcases the Larks' Tongues in Aspic line-up shortly before it went on to produce that classic album.

Despite its source, this is the best sounding live recording of the incredible Fripp, Wetton, Bruford, Cross and Muir King Crimson configuration.

---------

It’s remarkable, from this distance in time, to imagine that a band with four chart albums (and an official live bootleg) in its history and the reputation such entailed, could embark on a UK tour with a completely new line-up featuring just a single surviving founding member, playing a set consisting of newly composed material, some on the spot improvisations and, usually, an encore of one familiar tune - 21st Century Schizoid Man - and be expected by management and promoters not just to fill halls around the country but to sufficiently entertain the audiences from city to city so as not to get bottled off stage.

Welcome to King Crimson’s autumn/winter tour of the UK in 1972.
!

The best single live example of Jamie Muir’s short time with this line-up, this was King Crimson confidently playing the material that would, for the most part, make up the classic Larks’ Tongues in Aspic album.

Live in Newcastle, December 8, 1972 is the 48th title in the King Crimson Collectors’ Club series.

Behold Electric Guitar (CD)

PAUL GILBERT RETURNS TO MUSIC THEORIES RECORDINGS WITH NEW ALBUM
BEHOLD ELECTRIC GUITAR - TO BE RELEASED ON MAY 17, 2019

Paul Gilbert's newest album features 12 new original songs, all with Paul's most expressive, and inspired guitar playing to date!

Behold Electric Guitar was produced by legendary producer and engineer John Cuniberti (Joe Satriani) and features Roland Guerin on bass, Asher Fulero on keyboards and Bill Ray, Reinhardt Melz and Brian Foxworth on drums.

Although the album is mostly instrumental, Paul starts writing each song by writing the lyrics, and then transform those lyrics to melodies on the guitar. Paul's unused lyrics not only gave him a creative spark for the music but also yielded some interesting song titles. "Sir You Need to Calm Down," "I Own a Building," "Let That Battery Die," and "A Snake Just Bit My Toe" can certainly pique the curiosity of the listener. The exception to Paul's instrumental guitar theme is his poem, "A Herd of Turtles." Paul opted for his best Liverpudlian accent to recite his poem of hope, and inserted some ferocious funk riffs for musical contrast in between.

Tracklisting:
1. Havin' It
2. I Own a Building
3. Everywhere That Mary Went
4. Love Is the Saddest Thing
5. Sir, You Need to Calm Down
6. Let That Battery Die
7. Blues for Rabbit
8. Every Snare Drum
9. A Snake Just Bit My Toe
10. I Love My Lawnmower
11. A Herd of Turtles
12. Things Can Walk to You

Big Big Train have announced details of their new studio album exclusively with Prog.

The follow-up to 2017’s Grimspound and The Second Brightest Star is titled Grand Tour – and it’ll be released on May 17.

Following those releases, the band revealed that they intended to move on from writing music based on the “English landscape, the people that work on the land and their folklore stories.”

And the inspiration behind Grand Tour has been drawn from the 17th and 18th century custom where young men and women travelled across the world to broaden their minds, with the record focusing on “songs set in distant lands and beyond.”

Big Big Train drummer Nick D’Virgilio says: “There are songs inspired by the legacy of the Italian Renaissance genius, Leonardo da Vinci, songs telling the story of the rise and fall of Rome, of the beautiful mosaics of Ravenna, and of the shipwreck of a great poet, lost in a tempest off the coast of Italy. Along the way, the story of mankind’s greatest ever journey is told."

Vocalist David Longdon adds: “Grand Tour is a celebration of the human experience, of science and art, and of what it means to be alive.”

The album will be released on double heavyweight gatefold vinyl, which will come with a 24-page booklet, on digipack CD featuring a 52-page booklet, as standard and hi-resolution downloads, and on streaming platforms.

Big Big Train will head out on the road across the UK later this year with special guests Sweet Billy Pilgrim.

Heaven and Earth is the most comprehensive boxed set in the series to date, covering just over a decade in King Crimson’s extensive history.

It presents the most complete account of the ProjeKcts series with concerts by P1 – 4 & the sole studio recording of P2 in addition to a huge selection of ProjeKct albums and related recordings.

When the Double Trio line of Fripp, Belew, Levin, Mastelotto, Bruford, and Gunn wanted to develop new material at the end of the THRAK-era in 1997 they broke down into smaller groups, a process which Fripp dubbed fraKctalisation.

As the various band members in different groupings sought to road test ideas in front of audiences, the ProjeKcts, as they were called, often played in small clubs and away from large scale venues. As a result, this hugely creative undertaking was often unseen and unheard by the more general broader audience, and to that extent, the ProjeKcts can be said to represent ‘The Unknown King Crimson.’

Four CDs and two Blu-rays detail this risk-taking era in comprehensive detail.

When the individual players regrouped as King Crimson the band was now a double duo consisting of Belew, Fripp, Gunn, and Mastelotto with Tony Levin & Bill Bruford leaving to fulfill other recording and touring commitments.

The next period of KC activity resulted in two studio albums, a heavy touring schedule, a studio mini-album & a number of live releases on CD/DVD/download & ran to 2003.

The two studio albums are presented here for the first time in 5.1 surround mixes.

2000’s The ConstruKction of Light has undergone the most radical change of all KC albums thus far.

The loss of the original recordings of the electronic drums allowed Pat Mastelotto to completely rerecord the material on his current acoustic/electric kit making for a virtually completely new album of familiar material.

2003’s The Power to Believe has also benefited from additional sonic seasonings from the original recording sessions discovered by mixer/producer David Singleton & woven into the surround mix.

They are accompanied by a series of live recordings presented across 11 CDs of live recordings taken from the various tours including a US show with Tool and a specially construKcted 3CD set from 2000 which interweaves improvs & the London concert to produce a very different, very powerful imaginary KC set-list.

Every night of the 2000 European tour was also filmed in DGM off-shoot company, Bootleg TV style. This had the advantage that the crew filming became equally familiar with the set-lists, for example knowing when to get closer to particular musicians at key points, working out how best to film the improv sections and going with the flow of the gigs.

Most live concert films are precisely that: a film of a single performance or a couple of nights at a single venue.

With Bootleg TV, filming evolved to match the band and this Blu-Ray details a very different approach to live filming, with nearly ten hours of live video footage as proof of concept.

It's also just one example of why, at one point it was thought that this era would have to run across two boxed sets but by utilizing the full capacity of every disc included the entire history of the band in this era is presented, as it should be, in one place.

With King Crimson again off the road, in 2006 Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp became ProjeKct 6 and four of their concerts feature on Blu-Ray Disc 2.

Finally, CDs 17 and 18 present an idealized set-list drawn from the New York run of gigs from King Crimson’s 2008 US tour which saw the band playing live after an absence of five years. Following Trey Gunn’s departure, Tony Levin rejoined the band, and, with drummer Gavin Harrison making his debut with King Crimson, both he and Pat Mastelotto foreshadow the elements that would make the three drummer set-up of the present-day incarnation of King Crimson so spectacular.

Eleven years, numerous ProjeKcts, dozens of concerts, complete studio recordings of the era, with re-recordings in new stereo & 5.1, and over 10 hours of live video footage, Heaven and Earth is the most extensive account of this part of King Crimson’s ongoing story.

Primal Scream set to release a new singles compilation

maximumrocknroll480-480x492.jpg

Maximum Rock ‘N’ Roll features 31 of the band’s hits

Primal Scream are to release new singles collection called Maximum Rock & Roll.

The set features most of the band’s singles from across their career, and will be available as a two-CD set and across two double vinyl sets.

It’s the first compilation from the band since 2003’s Dirty Hits, and features 31 of the band’s singles from across their career and 11 albums, although they seem to have forgotten debut ‘All Fall Down’ and opted to start the collection off with ‘Crystal Crescent’’s seminal B-Side ‘Velocity Girl’ instead (and while we’re nitpicking, there’s no sign of Kevin Shields’ mix of ‘If They Move Kill ‘Em’ either.)

With no previously unreleased or even new content featured – apparently new songs were mooted but didn’t pass muster – it’s very much a celebration of the band’s career so far. Hopefully this is biding time for a 20th anniversary repackage of 2000’s XTRMNTR next year.

1998 concert film • Remixed audio • Restored visuals • Surround sound • 2CD+Blu-ray, 3LP vinyl + more formats
This June, Eagle Vision will issue Bridges To Bremen, a full-length show performed by The Rolling Stones on the final leg of the ‘Bridges To Babylon’ tour.

Bremen is in Northwest Germany and the gig was filmed at the city’s Weserstadion on 2 September 1998.  By this point the ‘Stones were three months into the European leg of this enormous year-long tour which had seen them fill stadia and arenas in North America, Asia and South America.

This was the first tour where fans could vote on the band’s website for a track they wanted to hear at the show, which is why ‘Memory Motel’ from Black and Blue is in the setlist.

In terms of audio and picture quality, it sounds promising, since Eagle Vision state that the film has been “meticulously restored from the original masters” while the audio has been remixed and remastered from the live multitrack recordings. Remember, even though this is offered on blu-ray, this isn’t full HD but ‘upscaled standard definition’. In terms of sound, we get uncompressed stereo and DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound.

A full range of formats is on offer, including 2CD+blu-ray and 2CD+DVD combo packs, 3LP vinyl and standalone blu-ray and DVD. The video element offers four tracks from their Soldier Field performances in Chicago.

Bridges to Bremen will be released on 21 June 2019.

1. (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
2. Let’s Spend The Night Together
3. Flip The Switch
4. Gimme Shelter
