16CD + 2 x blu-ray • Steven Wilson 5.1 mixes • Pre-order from SDE

This June, Universal Music will issue In Search of Hades: The Virgin Recordings 1973 – 1979 a massive 18-disc Tangerine Dream collection.

Tangerine Dream were pioneers of electronic and ambient music and this box set features newly remastered versions of the albums Phaedra, Rubycon, Ricochet, Stratosfear, Encore, Cyclone and Force Majeure all drawn from the original first generation master tapes and and new Stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound mixes of Phaedra and Ricochet by Steven Wilson.

In Search of Hades includes eight CDs of previously unreleased material including two CDs of Phaedra outtakes, three London concerts in full (Victoria Palace Theatre in 1974, The Rainbow Theatre in 1974 and Royal Albert Hall in 1975) along with the previously unreleased full soundtrack to ‘Oedipus Tyrannus’, recorded in July 1974 (which is also on the blu-ray remixed in 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo by Steven Wilson).

Due to what multi-track tapes were available Steven Wilson could only create stereo remixes of two tracks from Phaedra (the title track and ‘Sequent C’). Therefore for the 5.1 mix on the blu-ray, the other two tracks – ‘Mysterious Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares’ and ‘Moments of a Visionary’ – are Penteo up-mixes (i.e. not ‘true’ 5.1 but according to SW these still sound “very good”).

Steven explains his approach below:

“My role was to create new stereo and 5.1 mixes of whatever could be found of the original album multitrack tapes, but that turned out to be only Ricochet and 2 tracks from Phaedra. However, a number of reels of unreleased music were also found, such that ‘In Search of Hades’ also includes a generous 8 CDs of previously unreleased material. Perhaps most notable amongst these is the previously unreleased full soundtrack to ‘Oedipus Tyrannus’ (75 minutes) recorded in July 1974. Extracts from these recording sessions have previously been included on Rubycon, Encore and the Virgin sampler album ‘V’, but the full 75 minute recording has for the first time been mixed in stereo and 5.1 for the box set.”

As well as the 5.1 mixes of PhaedraOedipus Tyrannus and Ricochet, the two blu-ray discs offer visual content in the form of a 1976 German TV performance and a 35 minute live recording of Tangerine Dream at Coventry Cathedral.

The record label are calling this the “definitive statement of this period in Tangerine Dream’s history” and in terms of packaging this is presented as a 68-page hardback book featuring new sleeve notes, rare photographs and images of memorabilia.

In Search of Hades: The Virgin Recordings 1973-1979 is released on 14 June 2019.

As Steven Wilson himself said “As a big Tangerine Dream fan myself, I’ve waited a long time for a definitive set covering their classic period, so of course was very happy to be involved in putting this one together. If you are a fan too please note that, as with many of these lavish box set editions, it’s likely to be strictly a limited one-off pressing run, so don’t hesitate to pick it up!

You can pre-order this box set from the SDE shop via this link or the button below.

Motown: The Complete No. 1’s / 11CD

April 20, 2019 by Paul Sinclairtags: 1960s, 1970s, motown

Motown: The Complete No. 1's / 11CD

Motown: The Complete No. 1’s is being reissued as an 11CD box set in June.

This set features classic Motown songs that were number one somewhere in the world and it includes artists like Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, the Temptations, the Jackson 5, the Commodores, Gladys Knight & the Pips, the Four Tops, Boyz II Men, and many more.

There’s around 200 tracks in total and one difference from the previous set (released in 2008) is that this features a 11th bonus CD with the songs whose cover versions were number one, from Martha & the Vandellas’ ‘Dancing in the Street’ (No. 1 for Bowie and Jagger, of course) to Stevie Wonder’s original “Pastime Paradise” (adopted as Coolio feat. L.V.’s “Gangsta’s Paradise”).

Motown: The Complete No. 1’s comes creatively packaged in a box styled as a replica of the original Hitsville Motown building and is being reissued as part of Motown’s 60th anniversary celebrations in 2019.

While it’s not particularly cheap it does also include a 100-page photo book with an introduction by Smokey Robinson.

Motown: The Complete No. 1’s is released on 28 June 2019.

FOREIGNER
LIVE AT THE RAINBOW ‘78

Restored & Remastered Rare Early Performance. Released on Multiple Formats on March 15th 2019!
Pre-Order Now!

LONDON, January 29 – FOREIGNER and Eagle Vision today announced the release of the concert film, Foreigner Live At The Rainbow '78, which is available on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital video from March 15th.

After the band’s self-titled debut album had spent a year in the US Top 20, rock’s conquering heroes played a sold-out show at London’s celebrated Rainbow Theatre on April 27, 1978. Opening with “Long, Long Way From Home,” fans were treated to a magnificent display of musicianship and performance, including hit singles “Feels Like The First Time” and “Cold As Ice,” as well an exclusive preview of two tracks from the upcoming Double Vision album, “Hot Blooded” and “Double Vision.”

Featuring the classic FOREIGNER lineup of Mick Jones(lead guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Lou Gramm(lead vocals, percussion), Ian McDonald (guitars, keyboards, sax, flute, backing vocals), Al Greenwood (keyboards, synthesizer), Ed Gagliardi (bass, backing vocals) and Dennis Elliott (drums, backing vocals), this show captures the essence of a group who would go on to become one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time.

Forty years later, this definitive performance by the original band has been restored from the original film reels, remixed and remastered for this release.

“1978 was an absolutely magical time for the band,” remembers Mick Jones, “and to come back over to the UK to play a headline show at the legendary Rainbow really was a dream come true. The audience was amazing that night. We couldn't have wished for a better show.”

Fresh off their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Def Leppard will revisit their past a little more with the upcoming release of Volume Two, the second installment of their limited edition box set. This is the second of four volumes, with the band's '90s output encapsulated.

The set will be available as a 10-LP, 180gm vinyl box set or as a limited edition 7-CD set featuring all of the '90s recordings with their original packaging. The group had Ronan McHugh remaster the set, which was cut by Greg Moore. Look for it arriving on June 21.

For those needing a refresher, the band's '90s output included 1992's chart-topping Adrenalize album, the b-sides and rarities 1993 set Retro Active, the polarizing 1996 album Slang, which marked guitarist Vivian Campbell's first full album with the band, and 1999's Top 10 release, Euphoria. Also included in this box will be Rarities Vol. 2 and Vol. 3,with singer Joe Elliott sifting through the archives to add more b-sides and live recordings.

Def Leppard - Volume 2 will also come with a 40-page hardbound book filled with rare photos and introductions penned by the band members. You can check out the full track listing for the set below and get your pre-orders in ahead of the June 21 street date at this location.

Def Leppard will also be busy touring in the coming months. Look for the band playing a residency in Las Vegas as well as playing shows in Europe and Canada. All dates can be found here.

Bob Dylan / The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings 14CD box set

April 30, 2019 by Paul Sinclairtags: 1970s, Bob Dylan

The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings 14CD box set

Five Complete Sets From Rolling Thunder Revue Concerts • First Leg, Rehearsal Performances, Rarities And More

Sony’s Legacy Recordings will issue a massive 14CD box set edition of Bob Dylan‘s 1975 ‘Rolling Thunder Revue’ tour next month.

The comprehensive 14CD box set includes all five of Dylan’s full sets from that tour that were professionally recorded. The collection also delivers recently unearthed rehearsals at New York’s S.I.R. studios and the Seacrest Motel in Falmouth, MA plus a bonus disc showcasing one-of-a-kind performances from the tour.

dylan_box.jpg

The box features 148 tracks in all, with more than 100 of those never previously released. This box comes with a 52-page booklet featuring rare and never-before-seen Rolling Thunder Revue photos and an essay by novelist/musician Wesley Stace.

The previously released The Bootleg Series Volume 5 on vinyl, back in print for the first time since 2002 as a 3LP set with a 64-page booklet.

The 14CD box is tremendous value on Amazon in the UK at just £59 and also very cheap too if you’re in France. Also check out that superb JPC.de pre-order price for the 3LP set, it’s HALF the Amazon UK price.

The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1975 Live Recordings box will be issued on 7 June 2019.

20 years ago, we walked onto a stage in Somerset to perform a 45 minute set. It felt like any other show apart from the fact that it was the Glastonbury Festival and the BBC would be recording… I’m so glad the BBC were there and thrilled we can now release it on vinyl CD and stream it of course.

And back due to popular demand, we’re also re-releasing ‘The Man Who’!

This marks the very first release of ‘Live at Glastonbury ’99’, which will be available via 2-LP, CD and digital formats. The expanded edition of The Man Who, featuring 19 B-sides curated by the band, will be available digitally, on CD and 2-LP, and as a deluxe box set (back again by popular demand!)

Out 21st June!

You can stream the ‘Live at Glastonbury ’99’ performance of ‘Why Does it Always Rain on Me?’ NOW here https://travis.lnk.to/LiveAtGlastonburyStream

Rolling Stones / Rock and Roll Circus four-disc box and 3LP vinyl

May 1, 2019 by Ian Wadetags: 1960s, dolby atmos, Surround, The Rolling Stones

rocknroll_cover-480x490.jpg

Dolby Atmos surround • 2CD+DVD+blu-ray box • unheard audio

The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is being released as a four-disc deluxe box set which features the event on blu-ray (for the first time). There will also be a 3 LP vinyl version, featuring extra tracks not previously broadcast.

The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was shot over two days in December 1968 and featured guests such as The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull and the impromptu supergroup The Dirty Mac (which featured John Lennon, Keith Richards, Mitch Mitchell, Eric Clapton and, on bag, Yoko Ono) in addition to the original lineup of The Rolling Stones.

Shot in a north London television studio by director Michael Lindsay-Hogg, (he would shoot Let It Be shortly after) The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was a concert filmed with the band themselves as on-screen hosts in addition to performing. The audience were made up of fan club members and it was ostensibly meant to be a BBC TV special for the Beggars Banquet long player. But Brian Jones left and then died, and so the film wasn’t properly released for 28 years.

In terms of this reissue, the limited deluxe edition is a multi-format package consisting of blu-ray, DVD, 2CD and a 44-page book with David Dalton’s original 1969 Rolling Stone essay and photographs by Michael Randolf.

rocknroll600-480x345.jpg

Bonus material includes the late concert pianist Julius Katchen, three additional songs by Taj Mahal and never before heard recordings of The Dirty Mac performing The Beatles classic, ‘Revolution’ and the aptly titled track ‘Warmup Jam’. Released for the first time on Vinyl as a 3 LP package, the soundtrack is also available as a standalone 2CD set. Note: the blu-ray is not available separately it’s only in the box (for now, at least).

The stereo version on the CD and vinyl is a “new mix” while the blu-ray offers a Dolby Atmos surround mix. ABKCO are claiming that this is “the first archival concert film to be mixed using” Atmos. There’s also commentary tracks by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Tony Richmond, Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Yoko Ono and Marianne Faithfull, as well as an on-camera interview with Pete Townshend.

The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus is released 28 June 2019 via ABKCO.

Travis’ The Man Who box set returns

May 1, 2019 by Paul Sinclairtags: 1990s, travis

travis_manwho_480-480x490.jpg

Four-disc box set available again • New ‘Live at Glastonbury 99’ release

Travis‘ box set of their 1999 album The Man Who came and went quickly back in 2017, with quite a limited production (thought to be no more than 1500 in two small runs). That scarcity has driven prices sky-high, so fans who missed the boat will be please to hear that the same 2LP+2CD super deluxe box is being made available again, for the album’s 20th anniversary, thanks to a deal with Concord Music in the US.

It will be available in June on the Craft Recordings imprint and as a reminder, the large format lift-off lid box contains The Man Who album on vinyl and CD along with a B-sides album also on vinyl and CD. There are 19 B-sides on the CD but a small selection of 10 ‘favourites’ on the vinyl LP. It also comes with a glossy 48 page photo book ‘The Man Who Photo Album’.

The 20th anniversary box set of ‘The Man Who’

One major difference is that the 20th anniversary box will not include the signed print/art card that was included in the 2017 set. There is now a two-CD edition with the B-sides on the second CD and a 20th anniversary vinyl (no bonus tracks).

These 20th anniversary editions of The Man Who will be released on 21 June 2019. Craft Recordings are also issuing a brand new release, Travis Live at Glastonbury ’99 on the same date.

Original album remastered plus a whole disc of new music

Brian Eno‘s 1983 album Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks has been remastered and expanded for a special ‘extended edition’ due in July

The album was written, produced and performed by Brian Eno together with his brother Roger and Daniel Lanois. The music was originally recorded in 1983 for the feature-length documentary, For All Mankind, directed by American journalist, film director and screenwriter, Al Reinert.

apollo_2LP_crop.jpg

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, this remastered, extended edition of the album is available as a 2LP vinyl set or a two-CD deluxe hardcover book package. It features the original album remastered by Abbey Road’s Miles Showell as well as a while disc of new music: an album comprising 11 new instrumental compositions reimagining the soundtrack to For All Mankind.

The vinyl comes in a gatefold sleeve and includes a download. There are actually two CD editions: a limited and numbered deluxe with hardcover book and the standard 2CD. Both vinyl and CD editions are released on 19 July 2019. These can be pre-ordered from the SDE shop

Woodstock Deluxe

Limited Edition Collection Documents The Historic Festival In A Near

Complete Chronological Reconstruction Of Every Artist Performance

Across 38 Discs And 432 Tracks,

Including Nearly 20 Hours Of Previously Unreleased Audio

Available From Rhino On August 2

10-CD, 3-CD And 5-LP Versions Will Also Be Available On June 28

This summer will be the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, the defining event of a generation and one of the most iconic moments in popular music history. Despite its enduring cultural significance, no one has ever attempted to document the historic festival as it unfolded in real time. That is precisely what producers Andy Zax and Steve Woolard have done with a new 38-disc, 432-track boxed set that includes a near complete reconstruction of Woodstock across nearly 36 hours, with every artist performance from the festival included in chronological order. The collection boasts 267 previously unreleased audio tracks, totaling nearly 20 hours.

Limited to 1,969 individually numbered copies, WOODSTOCK - BACK TO THE GARDEN – THE DEFINITIVE 50TH ANNIVERSARY ARCHIVE comes in a screen-printed plywood box with canvas insert inspired by the Woodstock stage set up, designed by Grammy®-winning graphic designer Masaki Koike. The set also includes a Blu-ray copy of the Woodstock film, a replica of the original program, a guitar strap, two Woodstock posters, a reprint of a diary written by an attendee during the festival, two 8x10 prints from legendary rock photographer Henry Diltz, and essays by Zax, acclaimed music scribe Jesse Jarnow, and trailblazing rock critic Ellen Sander. Also included is a copy of Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music (Reel Art Press), a comprehensive new hardbound book about the event written by Michael Lang, one of the festival’s co-creators. The collection will be available on August 2. Pre-orders are available now at the Rhino.com store, bundled with four exclusive 18x15 lithographs by Dale Saltzman, based on banners that were onsite at the original festival.

Rhino also will release two other collections earlier in the summer on June 28. WOODSTOCK – BACK TO THE GARDEN – 50TH ANNIVERSARY EXPERIENCE features 162 tracks across 10 CDs and is the first Woodstock collection to feature live recordings of every performer at the festival . WOODSTOCK – BACK TO THE GARDEN – 50TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION includes 42 tracks and will be available as a both 3-CD and 5-LP sets. The 10-disc version will also be available via digital download.

Between August 15-18, 1969, more than 400,000 people converged on Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm in upstate New York for Woodstock. Thirty-two acts performed including some of the most popular and influential musicians of the era such as Joan Baez, The Band,

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Sly and the Family Stone, and The Who.

The concert spawned Michael Wadleigh’s Oscar®-winning documentary as well as a pair of soundtrack albums. Together, the film and records have created a popular mythology surrounding Woodstock, one that only paints a partial picture of what actually happened. BACK TO THE GARDEN, producer Andy Zax writes in the liner notes, is intended to let people hear the festival as it really happened.

“Wadleigh’s film tells a story of Woodstock, but it doesn’t tell the story...This 50th anniversary archive — which presents nearly all of the audio from the festival in something approximating real time — tells a different kind of story. If Wadleigh’s film is a kind of psychedelic Busby Berkeley musical, Back To The Garden is an audio-verité documentary…All of the mythology of Woodstock is here in this box; or at least, everything that would eventually create that mythology. The reality is here, too. And neither invalidates the other.”

The time-consuming challenge of reconstructing the concert audio began with locating the more than 60 multi-track reels recorded by Eddie Kramer and Lee Osborne, as well as the 100 or so soundboard reels recorded by the onstage crew. Sorting through those tapes – some of which had been edited, mislabeled or lost – and then reassembling them properly was a process that, in some cases, took years to complete.

Zax says he, sound producer Brian Kehew and mastering engineer Dave Schultz avoided interfering with the tapes as much as possible in order to preserve their authenticity. “It’s not surprising that other producers’ first reaction to these tapes over the years has been ‘uh-oh,’ immediately followed by ‘we’ve gotta find a way to fix this.’ I'm not unsympathetic to that approach, but if there's a single overriding lesson that Brian Kehew and I have learned since we began working with the Woodstock tapes in 2005, it’s this: you can't fix them… That’s less grim than it seems, because once you’ve accepted the idea that there is no way to make these recordings sound slick, you realize that these tapes are the sonic equivalent of heirloom tomatoes — slightly imperfect, but delicious.”

In some cases, however, they needed to take advantage of new technology to perform much-needed restorations that would not have been possible just a few years ago. Zax says: “The only surviving recording of Ravi Shankar’s Woodstock performance…is a mono reel with less than optimal sound. But the breakthrough de-mixing process developed by James Clarke at Abbey Road Studios allowed us to isolate and extract the parts played by each instrument and then create a new stereo mix. Similarly, recent improvements in polyphonic tuning have allowed us to repair previously unfixable horn parts in the Blood, Sweat & Tears performance, allowing it, for the first time, to be heard as originally intended.”

But the Woodstock audio isn't solely about music: it’s also about the people who were there. Fortunately, the microphones were left on throughout the festival, capturing everything from stagehands discussing lunch and audience members shouting requests for baseball scores, to Max Yasgur’s uplifting address to the audience gathered on his farm.

You can also hear the cavalcade of stage announcements made by stage manager John Morris and lighting director Chip Monck, who were drafted as emcees for the festival because no one hired one. On all three of these new anniversary collections, you can hear them between songs making announcements about everything from lost keys to warnings about “flat blue acid.” The final disc in the 38-disc box serves as an appendix and contains ancillary recordings and a few bits of audio whose placement within the sequence could not be confirmed.

As the cliché goes: If you can remember the 1960s, you weren’t there. BACK TO THE GARDEN provides a way for people who weren’t there to remember them. And for anyone who was there, perhaps this will jog their memory.

On his debut solo album Ends, Giancarlo Erra ably demonstrates a masterful gift for producing timelessly intimate and profoundly affecting music.
“I decided to call the album 'Ends', because each end is in actuality the possible start for something new (in both music and life). This isn't always easy to accept, and it’s something I often struggle with. The album title is a reminder and an encouragement, plus it’s an appropriate name for my solo debut which explores a different kind of music for me.”

Comprising a suite of eight thematically linked instrumentals, Ends deploys sparse piano patterns, synth textures, eerily beautiful string quartet performances, and subtle electronic pulses to create a compelling whole that establishes Erra as a composer of rare sensitivity and singular purpose. Freed from the constraints of writing songs and creating frameworks for his long-running post-rock collective Nosound, with Ends Erra has delivered the purest distillation of his musical vision.

In abandoning his voice, Giancarlo Erra has discovered a new one.
