Gracias a la página de Progjazz https://www.facebook.com/progjazz.org Hoy cumple 44 años el disco Rain Dances, de Camel , Este trabajo representa un interesante y arriesgado giro respecto de su aclamado "Moonmadness" del año anterior. Dicho giro se vio, al menos parcialmente, influido por el cambio en la formación de la banda, en que el bajista Doug Ferguson es sustituido por uno de los padres de la escena canterburiana: Richard Sinclair (The Wild Flowers, Caravan, Hatfield and the North), además de la incorporación de vientos como saxo, flauta y clarinete con Mel Collins (King Crimson, Bad Company, Humble Pie), junto con un conjunto de colaboradores para algunas pistas, entre quienes destaca Brian Eno, uno de los pioneros del ambient, quien participó en la canción "Elke". Estos cambios llevan el sonido de Camel a alejarse levemente de la densidad progresiva que desarrollaron en sus dos anteriores álbumes, construyendo pasajes muy melódicos, pero conservando la elegancia e identidad del grupo. Incluso podemos apreciar ciertos toques de jazz. De este modo, solo hay una pieza que rememora sus días de Moonmadness, gracias a los arreglos instrumentales en "First Light", la pieza que da inicio a este maravilloso viaje.

Nuevo single de Steve Hackett 'Scorched Earth'

Gracias a progjazz Hay discos que son esenciales, álbumes que forman parte del ADN del ser pensante, obras maestras que trascienden el tiempo y el espacio. Uno de de esas piedras filosofales es Close to the Edge de la legendaria banda Yes( el quinto de su discografía ) que fue lanzado un 13 de septiembre de 1972, grabado en los estudios londinenses de Advision y producido por Eddy Offord y la banda. Después de la grabación del álbum, Bill Bruford abandona Yes no solo por su deseo de expandir sus horizontes musicales sino porque la relación dentro de la banda no era de las mejores. Es un disco que a pesar de contener solo tres temas, se transformó en un pilar de la música de vanguardia. Todo comienza con el tema homónimo del disco, Close to the Edge, que es liberación, caos, explosión de sonidos, un viaje molecular que en su letra está basada en la novela del poeta y novelista alemán/suizo Hermann Hesse, Siddaharta que nos habla del viaje de búsqueda espiritual del personaje principal. Un track que pasaría por la ilusión del tiempo para transformarse en energía eterna. Los sonidos que se escapan a través de la luz dan forma al siguiente tema, And You And I , que en forma casi pastoral y recorriendo en puntillas las melodias dan forma a un prisma de ensoñaciones y visiones de un lugar interdimensional. El tercer y último ingrediente de este album alquímico es Siberian Khatru ( palabra que según Anderson significa " como usted deseé, en un dialecto árabe ) con un gran riff de inicio por parte de Steve Howe que evoluciona a uno de los temas más potentes en la discografía de Yes. Un disco que a pesar de todas las dificultades en su grabación transmutó a una nueva forma de entendimiento de lo que el sonido puede provocar. Solo es una ilusión pero nuestras moléculas llevan escuchando este big bang sonoro hace 49 años...

Probablemente este sea el disco más progresivo del grupo comandado por Rick Davies y Roger Hodgson, y aunque muchas veces fue calificado como conceptual, no es un trabajo que estrictamente tenga este sentido. En efecto, sus canciones giran en torno a temáticas oscuras, tales como soledad, abandono, inestabilidad mental, depresión, tristeza, ira o desconsuelo. El propio Hogdson hablaría de esto: “Era un álbum que te hacía pensar, pero no álbum conceptual. Las ocho canciones que lo conformaban habían sido compuestas en épocas totalmente distintas, aunque estaban colocadas de tal forma que cada una podía ser la respuesta a la pregunta que formulaba la anterior. Tal vez no eran nuestras canciones favoritas, pero las grabamos porque nos parecieron las más idóneas. La mayoría de ellas eran muy antiguas, y parecían encajar unas con otras, así que decidimos utilizarlas. Y la cosa funcionó muy bien tanto en el disco como sobre el escenario. Posiblemente las dos primeras canciones, ‘School’ y ‘Bloody Well Right’, fueron las que hicieron surgir el término ‘álbum conceptual’”. De hecho, tenían varias otras canciones como candidatas para formar parte del disco, pero finalmente no fueron incluidas. Como sea, "Crime of the Century" representa una exquisita mezcla de rock con matices pop (más notorios en canciones como "Dreamer"), y que cierra magistralmente con la pieza homónima, de excelsos arreglos instrumentales (el saxo de Helliwell es sublime) con letras que nos hablan acerca del desastre ambiental ocasionado por la codicia humana. ¡Felices 47 años!

Del sitio de facebook de Progjazz https://www.facebook.com/progjazz.org Celebramos el nacimiento del baterista, compositor y autor, el maestro, profesor, sensei, Neil Peart, un 12 de septiembre de 1952 en Hamilton, Ontario, Canadá. Las primeras influencias del profesor fueron Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Ginger Baker, Michael Giles, John Bonham, entre otros. A la edad de 18 años, Neil se fue a vivir a Londres buscando su oportunidad de fama y fortuna para solo encontrar el anonimato y la casi pobreza, pero en sus palabras, aprendió mucho sobre la vida. Al retornar a Canadá tocó en variadas bandas locales, hasta que en julio de 1974 audicionó para una banda llamada Rush que buscaba a su nuevo baterista. El primer disco en donde podemos escuchar al maestro es Fly by Night de 1975. No solo se convirtió en el nuevo baterista de la banda sino que también en el escritor de las letras de las canciones de los subsiguientes álbumes. Entre sus trabajos aparte de Rush, produjo un disco en dos volúmenes como tributo a Buddy Rich llamado Burning for Buddy, tocó en el álbum del bajista Jeff Berlin de 1985 llamado Champion, también hizo dos dvds sobre la batería como son A Work in Progress y Anatomy of a Drum Solo. Igualmente editó siete libros en donde habla sobre su otra pasión, sus viajes en motocicleta y sus aventuras. Un músico respetado, admirado y querido que un 7 de enero del 2020 se nos fué provocando un dolor que todavía no se va. Te recordamos y te extrañamos profesor...

El primer tema, Penguin in Bondage contiene partes de dos diferentes shows, uno es del concierto en el Roxy y otra proviene de un show dado el 11 de mayo de 1974 en el Auditorium Theater en Chicago. Los siguientes tracks, Pygmy Twylyte, Dummy Up, Village of the Sun, Echidna's Arf ( of you ), Don't You Ever Wash That Thing, Cheepnis y Be-Bop Tango ( Of the Old Jazzmen's Church ) fueron grabados en el Roxy.
