Socio musical de Frank Zappa, Beefheart lanzó en 1969 con su Magic Band el disco Trout Mask Replica, considerado desde entonces un hito en el rock experimental. Desde los ’80, Beefheart se dedicaba a pintar y exponer. Sufría de esclerosis múltiple.
