Nothing! Being an audiophile is a hobby and as such these hobbyists are allowed their eccentricities. Nobody has the right to ‘pop the bubble' of happy folk. I have been a partial audiophile since the 70’s. This meant buying and reading the monthly hi-fi magazines. Aspiring toward the ‘A' rated 5 star equipment, visiting hi-fi shops even on a Sunday when they were closed (pre Sunday opening) and studying the wonderful offerings in the window. For many it means helping the economy by spending taxed income on the eternal upgrade path heading toward Valhalla (even this name was used as an upgrade for the Linn Sondek upgrade) All the time forcing the brain to believe that each upgrade of speaker cable, interconnects, cartridge, tone arm, speaker stand - brought the listener closer to heaven. Now spare a thought for the long suffering partner (mostly female I would wager) being co-opted into the hobby - ‘come and listen to this, can you hear the difference? No!!! You can't be listening properly, just move your listening position to here.

Then the aesthetics (or anesthetics as the partner might spell the word) everything has to be in separate boxes, amplifier, pre amplifier, CD player, headphone amplifier, FM tuner, digital tuner, DAC, separate power supplies for almost all of these items. Then you have a turntable with an acrylic clear cover that must not be dusted by the unitiated as polishing this will result in scratches - equipment needs to be adorned and worshipped by the audiophile. So you have one wall covered by a pretty solid unit that displays all of these ‘boxes'. By the way I started with the Quad 33, 303, fm3 all in sage green with orange bits - stunning. Later upgrading to the Quad 66, 606, 67 CD with matching tuner - the unique part of this kit being the remote that accompanies it - it is the size of a large box of chocolates and weighs a kilo or two - stunning I hear you say. By the way one of the contributors mentioned the quality of electrostatic speakers - well google Quad electrostatic speakers and bask in their aesthetics.

I have got to stop but now let's add the final element - cables. You end up with a snake pit of cables running behind, under, over out the sides of all of these boxes - it is truly impossible to hide them but worst of all are the speaker cables. After all this investment you then can listen to ….. Being a partial audiophile myself I can raise this spectre - is the audiophile after the ultimate in music reproduction or a collector of the equipment?

I am now in my sunset of hi-fi, gone are the various boxes I now have just one Naim, the speaker cables are ducted in the walls and under the floor and the speakers are piano finished Italian, the source of all recorded music is relegated to the loft where a hard disc (NAS) holds thousands of FLAC tracks but internet radio from around the world entertains me on a daily basis. In my mind I have now arrived, no more upgrades and no more envy. Sigo leyendo los artículos, aunque las mejores revistas se han ido hace tiempo, pero dejo la afición a los jóvenes turcos que tienen toda una vida de actualizaciones por delante.
